St Joseph School Students Put Thanks Into Words for WWII Vet

St. Joseph School students Kristen Harrell (left) and Nia Flynn worked on a letter writing project honoring World War II veteran Clem Framarin.

Putting Thanks Into Words

World War II vet Clem Framarin waited for mail from home when he served in Italy for 21 months. Framarin again experienced mail call, and was showered with letters written by the 8th grade class at St. Joseph School in Homewood when he was part of a recent Honor Flight to Washington, D.C..

“We got involved in our letter-writing project after Mr. Framarin’s daughter, Deb Framarin, asked for assistance. She was trying to get as many volunteers as possible to write letters to her dad, so that he would be part of the mail call on his trip to see the World War II monument,” said St. Joseph Principal Dan Fleming. “Our students were great about taking on the task. Under the direction of teacher Mrs. Sue Mazur, they each composed a letter for Mr. Framarin, a St. Joseph parishioner.”

The sentiments expressed by the students were touching.

Here are a few examples: Nia Flynn told him she was sure he was brave and she was very grateful for his service to his country. Kristin Harrell said although Mr. Framarin was just one soldier, she knew he had an important role, and with his fellow soldiers he helped win the war.

“I was delighted that our students could play a part in this special tribute to our veterans,” Fleming added. “This is just one of the special service projects our students are undertaking. It not only helped them connect with history, it also gave them insights into what the World War II veterans did for our country and the importance of service—in any capacity.”
