Flossmoor honors architect, commission member Scott Gummerson

Scott Gummerson was remembered this week as an architect, as a volunteer on Flossmoor village commissions, as a family man and as a friend.

In a resolution Monday, Flossmoor Village Board members honored Gummerson, who died May 12 from complications due to acute myeloid leukemia.

“We really respected Scott,” said Mayor Paul Braun. “He did a good job for the village. He was a great friend and he will be missed.”

Braun presented a plaque inscribed with the resolution to Gummerson’s wife, Gigi, herself a former village board member and business owner in downtown Flossmoor.

Gummerson served more than 20 years on Flossmoor boards, including the Appearance Commission and Architectural Advisory Commission. In 2008, he was appointed to the village Plan Commission, where he served for seven years.

The resolution states that Gummerson, as a Plan Commission member, always “demonstrated his commitment to an open, fair and balanced approach” to petition requests and ensured that Flossmoor’s high community standards were upheld.

Gummerson was “a man of intelligence, impeccable taste and attention to detail,” the resolution states. As a licensed architect who worked throughout the Chicago area, he designed thousands of renovations and custom homes, including 500 residential projects in Flossmoor.

The resolution thanks Gummerson and his family for his dedication and volunteerism, and for all his contributions to the community.

“His experience and knowledge made him an invaluable asset to the community,” the resolution says. “He will be greatly missed.”
