Gordon Knight and Virginia Shipman, veteran crossing guards, help a group of students cross 183rd Street Thursday, Aug. 27. The pair tend the intersection of 183rd and Aberdeen streets in Homewood.

It was the first day of school for District 153 students. The district was the last local school district to start the school year because of renovation projects at the James Hart/Millennium building.

Knight and Shipman said they were looking forward to renewing acquaintance with students and meeting new students coming to Millennium School for the first time.
