Some of the snow that fell Monday night is about to become airborn as winds pick up tonight, sending wind chill values plummeting, according to the National Weather Service.

A wind chill warning is in effect until noon Thursday, Jan. 8, and blowing snow could cause drifting and reduce visibility.

Winds are expected to reach 15 to 20 mph with gusts as high as 35 mph, NWS officials said.

The wind child Tuesday night is expected to be 30 to 35 degrees below zero, and after rising to 25 below Wednesday, will dip even lower Wednesday night, reaching as low as -40.

NWS officials warn that in these conditions, exposed skin can experience frost bite after as little as 15 minutes. Extended exposure without proper clothing increases the risk of hypothermia. NWS officials urge area residents to take precautions, including bringing pets indoors.
