Police Reports: June 13, 2015

Got an old bike in your garage that hasn’t been used in years? How about a box of sensitive personal documents detailing tax records or bank statements?

The Village of Flossmoor is offering an easy way to “recycle” an unused bicycle or dispose of personal records that should not go out with the regular trash. Bike recycling and paper shredding will take place in the Village Hall parking lot from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Village Hall is located at 2800 Flossmoor Road.

The village, along with the Flossmoor Public Library, is hosting the paper shredding event to raise awareness and promote prevention of consumer fraud and identify theft. Destruction of paper materials is done quickly while you watch. Only residential documents will be shredded — no business documents will be accepted — and there is a limit of four boxes or four paper grocery bags. Only paper items will be shredded. Staples and paper clips are acceptable but binder clips, binders, hard cover books and magazines cannot be shredded.

The bike recycling event is designed to provide transportation to people in need. Flossmoor is partnering with Working Bikes, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, eligible to receive tax deductible donations. Working Bikes donates to individuals and partners with organizations in Chicago, providing transportation to people in homeless transition and youth empowerment programs. The organization also ship bikes to developing countries where a bike can truly change a life. With help from communities like Flossmoor, Working Bikes is able to donate more than 6,000 bicycles each year to international and local partners.
