District 153 is doing major work on its Millennium and James Hart School buildings, and Homewood-Flossmoor High School is tearing up part of its parking lot in preparation for resurfacing.

Crews are working despite the inclement weather that’s brought lots of rain in the area.

The District 153 school board sold $3.6 million in funding bonds to underwrite the major life safety projects that include roof replacement at the Millennium/Hart building at 183rd and Aberdeen, and roof repairs at Churchill and Willow Schools, as well as other work inside the buildings.

The district has planned for 51 construction days running through Aug. 14. The roofing work is divided into 19 subsections.

“Our overall project end date has not changed,” said John Gibson, chief school business official.  “The roofers have changed the order of roofs; some of them handle a rain cover better than others, so they can still get work done, but not as fast as needed,” he explained.

“As planned, they will work some Saturdays and have a double crew to minimize the possibility of falling behind. With rain scheduled for next week, they will continue to play things day by day and keep moving as well as possible,” he added. “I am positive that drier days are ahead for us.”

Accu-Paving Co is resurfacing the east side of the parking lot at H-F. The $351,600 project is underwritten by student parking fees, said Ken Parchem, H-F business manager.
