Independence Day festivities in HF include concert, 2 parades, community picnic

Local residents can get a run-up to their Fourth of July celebrations at the Starry Nights concert Friday night and keep rolling Saturday with the Homewood Fourth of July Parade followed by the Family Fun Fest community picnic.

The concert at 7 p.m. Friday at Irwin Park bandshell, presented by Homewood-Flossmoor Park District, will feature new and old songs from a new view performed by B.B.I.

B.B.I. "possesses an ebullient live spirit that cuts across ages, races and backgrounds," according to the park district website announcement.

The gates open at 6 p.m. for this free show. A craft beer tent will feature the offerings of 5 Rabbit Brewery in addition to domestic beers and wine. Food will also be available for purchase from local vendors, such as Wiley’s Grill, Cilantro’s and Dairy Queen.

The Starry Nights concert series is made possible by sponsors AAA Rental, Advocate South Suburban Hospital, Bimba Manufacturing, Dragon Inn, Edgar Wright - Edward Jones, Flossmoor Family Automotive, Great Lakes Credit Union, Homewood Disposal, Kirschner Vision, The Center For Dental Excellence & Walt’s Food Centers.

Homewood's parade Saturday morning will begin at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph's School parking lot and will travel south to Ridge Road, then east on Ridge to Izaak Walton Preserve. Line-up for parade participants will begin at 8:30 a.m., according to village officials.

Family Fun Fest, sponsored by the park district, will begin at Izaak Walton Preserve after the parade and will last until 2 p.m. with games and family entertainment.

Residents can also get warmed up for the mile-long parade by joining in the H-F Racquet & Fitness Club's Run for Freedom 5K race, which will start at Lions Club Pool at 8 a.m.  

The race winds through a beautiful Homewood neighborhood and ends back at the pool, according to the park district website. 

Register by Thursday for $25/resident, $28/non-resident fee, or sign up the morning of the race for $30. The fee includes refreshments, a T-shirt and the official timing system. For more information, call 708-799-1323.

Flossmoor will celebrate Independence with a 4th of July Children's Parade that will begin at Infant Jesus of Prague School. The lineup will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the parade will start at 10 a.m.

This parade is for children of all ages and everything from strollers to two-wheelers are allowed, according to email from the village. Children are encouraged to decorate their bikes, trikes or wagons. Ice cream will be served at the end of the parade along with demonstrations by the Flossmoor Fire Department.
