Parolee charged with Flossmoor home burglary

A Flossmoor man, on parole from an Illinois prison, was arrested last week following an April 26 home burglary in the village.

Clayton Ebanks

Clayton Ebanks, 22, of the 2600 block of Hawthorne Lane, was charged with residential burglary, said Deputy Police Chief Tod Kamleiter. Ebanks was arrested and charged on April 28 and is being held on a $50,000 bond.

Ebanks was paroled from the Shawnee Correctional Center last December and was then subject to a three-month house arrest, Kamleiter said.

Last month’s burglary, on the 2900 block of Kathleen Lane, was reported when the homeowner returned to find that his residence had been ransacked sometime between 9:30 a.m. and 7 p.m.  Kamleiter said officers secured the home and a department evidence technician was called in to process the crime scene. The resident reported that jewelry was taken from the home

“An investigator, acting on his intuition, searched area pawn shops for matching jewelry and customers known to him to have committed burglaries in the past,” Kamleiter said. The hunch paid off and the investigator found that Ebanks had pawned jewelry – allegedly stolen during the burglary – on the same day as the crime.

Ebanks was taken into custody without incident, Kamleiter said. Evidence recovered at the time of the arrest implicated Ebanks’s involvement, he said

Kamleiter said Ebanks was arrested for burglary in Flossmoor in 2010 and 2011. He was convicted of residential burglary in 2011 and received an eight-year sentence.
