Cupich will officiate at the 9:30 Mass at IJP, located at Flossmoor Road and Leavitt Avenue. Following the service, a reception will be held in the church hall.

The Rev. Michael Nacius, IJP’s pastor, announced Cupich’s visit in this Sunday’s church bulletin.

In his announcement, Nacius points out that May 24 is Pentecost Sunday, the 40th day after Easter when, according to the New Testament, apostles and early followers of Christ were visited by the Holy Spirit.

Pentecost is sometimes referred to as “the birthday of the church” and Nacius is inviting parishioners to wear red, the traditional Pentecost color, on that day. He said some other parishioners may wear ethnic costumes to the service.

At 10:30 a.m. on May 17, Nacius said, members of the IJP community will take part in a photo jam. He is hoping to get as many people as possible in the picture and said some parishioners will hold signs spelling out “Happy 40th Fun! Jubilee Archbishop Cupich.”

“The rest of us will be present in the picture to be part of the smiling, welcoming and spirited community that we call IJP,” Nacius said. “We look forward to then presenting the printed picture to Archbishop Cupich on Pentecost Sunday to let him know of our best wishes.”
