Traffic was slow at the 183rd Street viaduct Thursday afternoon and is likely to be slow Friday morning, too, as Homewood Public Works crews implement a plan to combat nuisance birds.
Assistant Public Works Director Dave Ebert said the department has come up with a new plan to address the maintenance issues caused by pigeons flocking around the viaduct structure.
“The fall out from birds over the years has added to the filth experienced by our pedestrians while travelling through the viaduct,” Ebert said in an email message to the HF Chronicle. “Our efforts are expected to drastically reduce the mess, while at the same time reducing the burden of upkeep and an ongoing financial expense.”
He said work on the eastbound lanes would begin Friday morning. More work will follow, but it should have less impact on traffic, he said.
