Homewood Taekwondo instructor Patti Barnum earns elite rank

One juvenile was apprehended and another suspect remains at large after the two allegedly accosted and attempted to rob an off-duty police officer late Thursday in Homewood, according to a news release from the Homewood Police Department.

The two suspects approached the officer in the 18600 block of Klimm Avenue shortly before 11 p.m.

“One of the offenders pointed a handgun at the victim and demanded that he exit the vehicle,” said Deputy Chief Denise McGrath in the news release. “The victim, an armed off-duty police officer, discharged his firearm in defense.”

The two ran away, and the officer pursued them. Homewood police officers and officers from neighboring towns responded to the scene. One offender, a 17-year-old from Chicago Heights, was taken into custody, McGrath said.

A police K9 unit was requested to assist in the search for the second suspect, but he was not apprehended.

A handgun, which did not belong to the victim, was recovered near the scene of the incident, she said.

A vehicle that had been stolen in Chicago Heights earlier that day was located in the 18600 block of Golfview Avenue. The handgun and the vehicle will be processed for evidence to establish if there are any connection to the offenders.

The Homewood Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit is continuing the investigation.

The incident caused some alarm among residents south of 183rd Street and west of Dixie Highway. Several reported hearing the gunshots and saw officers engaged in the search for the second offender. Some residents said they heard a helicopter circling the neighborhood. McGrath said no helicopter was used by law enforcement in the search.
