No one was injured in a house fire in Homewood Tuesday night, but the residence suffered extensive damage, according to fire department officials.

Homewood firefighters responded to 18803 Morgan St. after receiving the fire call at 9:22 p.m., according to Fire Chief Bob Grabowski.

One resident was home when the fire started but was able to escape, he said.

The fire began in a family room and spread throughout the home. Although the interior was gutted, the dwelling should be salvageable, he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Five HFD units responded to the blaze and mutual aid departments from Flossmoor, Glenwood, Thornton, South Holland and East Hazel Crest provided support and station coverage. Homewood police also responded to the scene to provide assistance.

The fire was under control in about 30 minutes, Grabowski said, and the last unit left the scene about midnight.

The home did not have a working smoke detector, Grabowski said. He noted that representatives from Mutual Aid Box Alarm System District 24 (MABAS) would canvas the immediate neighborhood tonight to check whether residents have working smoke detectors and to remind those who do to check the batteries.

He said the incident could serve as a reminder to all residents to make sure to check their smoke detectors regularly.
