Flossmoor approves MFT street resurfacing program

Nine Flossmoor streets will be resurfaced this year as part of the annual motor fuel tax program.

Village board members Monday awarded a contract to D Construction, Inc., of Coal City, which is expected to begin the resurfacing work in September.

Public Works Director John Brunke told the board that the company was the lowest qualified bidder for the MFT work. D Construction has done work in Flossmoor before, he said, and the results were always more than satisfactory.

D Construction submitted a bid of $214,824.84. Three other companies also submitted bids.

Motor fuel taxes are collected by the State of Illinois as part of the revenues from gasoline sales. MFT funds are regulated by the Illinois Department of Transportation and distributed to municipalities across the state. No local tax dollars are used in the Flossmoor street resurfacing program.

Mayor Paul Braun said this year’s municipal budget included $220,000 for MFT resurfacing. He told Brunke that the difference between the company’s bid and the budget – slightly more than $5,000 – should be used for spot repairs to troublesome streets around Flossmoor.

Brunke said he was sure that the contractor would be able to fit in spot work at roadways that need more than the patching provided by Public Works.

Streets on this year’s MFT resurfacing list are:

  • Dundee Avenue from Brumley Drive to Heather Road.
  • Gordon Drive from Park Drive to Bruce Avenue.
  • Strieff Lane.
  • Link Court.
  • Emilia Court.
  • Arquilla Lane.
  • Hutchison Road from Western Avenue to Collett Lane.
  • Gardner Road from 724 Gardner to Hutchison Road.
  • Collett Lane from Hutchison Road to Dixie Highway.

In other business Monday, the village board paid tribute to Kevin Jordan, who is stepping down as a member of Flossmoor’s Human Relations Commission. He has been a member of the commission since 2006.

Braun read a resolution honoring Jordan, and expressing the village’s appreciation for the contributions he has made to the community.

According to the resolution, Jordan has carried out his duties with “confidence and zest” and has contributed to “a spirit of harmonious relations, effective marketing of the Village of Flossmoor and the greater Homewood-Flossmoor community, and the delivery of successful community programs including Movies in Our Parks, the Meet and Greet, Winterfest and Flossmoor Fest.”
