Arrest made in railway guard’s shooting death

An East Hazel Crest man was arrested Sunday night in connection with the shooting death of a railway security guard on Nov. 26 in Harvey.

Rashad Williams, 24, was arrested by Harvey police about 9 p.m. in Chicago Heights, according to ABC7 News. Williams reportedly is a convicted felon with a prior record of weapons violations.

At a news conference, Harvey Deputy Police Chief Gregory Thomas thanked members of the public for providing tips that led to Sunday’s arrest. He said Chicago Heights police helped with surveillance during the investigation.

Police said Williams is accused of shooting Tyrone Harding, 38, of Riverdale, who was a contract railway guard working for CN Railway.

The shooting occurred after Williams allegedly stole a vehicle late in the afternoon of Nov. 26, crashed at the viaduct near 159th Street and Park Avenue and ran up onto the tracks, where he encountered Harding.

After firing more than a dozen shots, wounding Harding in the abdomen, Williams allegedly stole a CN vehicle. That vehicle was found abandoned in the 100 block of 171st Street, according to police.

Harding was taken to South Suburban Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An arrest warrant for Williams was issued Thursday, Dec. 1, on the charge of first-degree murder.

Williams is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
