Organizers of the 2017 event are seeking greater participation from local non-profit organizations. The joint community service event is being promoted by both villages. As a result of recruitment efforts by Homewood and Flossmoor, 10 organizations have already registered to take part in service projects or donation drives.

The 2017 MLK Day of Service will feature community service open houses at both Homewood and Flossmoor village halls and a joint community food drive to benefit Respond Now’s food pantry.

Non-perishable food donations will be accepted through Jan. 16 at Flossmoor’s village hall and the library. Homewood will collect food items at the village hall between noon and 2 p.m. on MLK Day.

The Flossmoor Cares Service Celebration will take place at the village hall between 2 and 4 p.m. Participants can share service stories and learn more about community services provided by the Village of Flossmoor. The Green Committee will host a family-friendly service project.

St. Joseph Church and the Homewood Public Library are also hosting MLK Day projects.

Local nonprofit organizations can connect to the community in two main ways on Jan. 17:

  • Host an MLK Day of Service Project: Event organizers will send volunteers to local nonprofit organizations that plan MLK service projects at their locations. Last year, nearly 200 helpers took part in the PADS project.

  • Donation Drive: Nonprofit groups can provide a wish list of needed items and we MLK Day organizers will recruit community members to run the donation drive.

Flossmoor’s Community Relations Commission, inspired by the work and dream of Dr. King, locally implemented the national day of service two years ago.

Last year, a group of more than 200 community members — made up of local clubs, teams, businesses and families — donated their time and resources to complete service projects and food/supply drives for areal organizations.

Ten local organizations benefitted from their efforts, including Respond Now, PADS, the Jones Center and JourneyCare Kids Who Care.
