“I was a student here,” Latham told the District 161 board of education, which unanimously approved her for the key administrative post. “I attended Heather Hill, Flossmoor (now Parker) Junior High and Homewood-Flossmoor High School.”

After that, Latman received an education degree from Northern Illinois University and began a successful career as a teacher and school administrator.

“I’ve been at all types of schools, some high achieving and some low achieving,” she said.

Now, though, Latman said she had a sense of returning to where she first decided to be an educator.

“Welcome home,” said board member Christine Marks.

Latman is currently director of special education in Cicero School District 99. Superintendent Craig Doster said Latman’s experiences as a special education director, cooperative special education supervisor and assistant principal have given her the qualities and leadership skills needed to work with District 161 community members.

“Ms. Latman brings with her a wealth of administrative experience and commitment to students as well as the ability to work collaboratively with students and staff,” Doster said.

“She will continue to provide quality educational experiences and learning opportunities for our special education students and staff.”

Latman will take over the special education post this summer. She will replace Nancy Wilson, who has been a teacher and administrator in District 161 for 25 years, and is retiring. Doster thanked Wilson for her years of service.

“She will be missed and we wish her well in retirement,” he said.
