As Flossmoor’s Meijer superstore nears completion, the retail giant is looking for workers.

Meijer last week posted job openings in three categories: cake decorator, meat cutter and receiving clerk. The jobs were listed at jobs.meijer.com.

The cake decorator will be responsible for preparing and decorating cakes, and also filling and conditioning the cake case throughout the shift. Key responsibilities include managing cake outdates daily, receiving and processing cake orders and managing cake and icing inventory.

The meat cutter will be responsible for assisting in the daily cutting of fresh beef and pork and also following the production schedule to meet requirements for advertised fresh meat cuts. Key responsibilities include assisting in the writing of fresh meat orders, and organizing and checking in fresh meat deliveries.

The receiving clerk will be responsible for unloading trucks, separating live load and creating live load tickets. Job candidates must be able to repeatedly lift 10 to 75 pounds and must be able to lift, carry, push, pull, bend and twist while handling products.

Meijer is likely to announce openings for the bulk of jobs at the Flossmoor store about two months before its opening.

The 192,000 square foot Meijer store is expected to open in late spring or early summer. The exterior of the store – located on the north side of Vollmer Road just east of Crawford Avenue – was completed last fall and work since then has centered on the inside of the building.

When opened, the store will be open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. It will offer a wide range of grocery and general merchandise, including national brands, a full-service pharmacy, electronics and photo department and lawn/garden center. Meijer will offer more than 600 types of fresh produce, a full-service deli and meat counter and fresh bread baked four times a day.

The Meijer store is expected to give a needed economic boost to Flossmoor. Village officials have estimated that the store will bring in $250,000 in property taxes and $500,000 in sales tax. In a document submitted to the Illinois Comptroller’s office last year, Flossmoor officials said Meijer has invested $13.58 million in the project.

Meijer purchased the store site from the village, which designated the area north of Vollmer and between Central Park Avenue and Crawford as a tax increment financing (TIF) district. Meijer is expected to develop five additional retail spaces in its complex.

Flossmoor still has 26 acres on the former TIF district land and plans to develop that property for retail use. Late last year, the village entered into a contract with Houseal Lavigne Associates, of Chicago, a consulting firm specializing in municipal economic development. Houseal Lavigne will provide advisory services aimed at attracting the right developers on the land next to the Meijer complex.
