Homewood’s indoor farmers market returns Saturday

Meijer announced Monday it is seeking applicants for 280 jobs at its Flossmoor superstore, scheduled to open this summer.

In a press release, the retailer said available positions will include openings for clerks and cake decorators, customer service jobs, cashiers, receiving clerks and meat cutters. Starting pay will be based on experience level and specific skills.

Potential candidates should begin the hiring process by applying online at http://greatjobsatmeijer.com/. Enter “Flossmoor” in the location search field and click search. Hourly candidates can apply by clicking on the positions listed.

The retailer, based in Grand Rapids, Mich., operates 223 supercenters and grocery stores throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky and Wisconsin.

Meijer leadership will screen applicants within the next few weeks and select candidates will be contacted to schedule in-person interviews.

Construction of the 192,000-square-foot Meijer store began last May. The exterior of the store – located on the north side of Vollmer Road just east of Crawford Avenue – was completed last fall and work since then has centered on the inside of the building.

When opened, the store will be open 24 hours a day and seven days a week. It will offer a wide range of grocery and general merchandise including national brands, a full-service pharmacy, electronics and photo department and lawn/garden center. Meijer will offer more than 600 types of fresh produce, a full-service deli and meat counter and fresh bread baked four times a day.

The Meijer store is expected to give a welcome economic boost to Flossmoor. Village officials said last week that they expect Meijer to produce about $354,000 in sales tax for eight months of the 2017 fiscal year, which begins in May. Eventually, the village expects to receive about $750,000 a year in sales and real estate taxes from the Meijer complex. In a document submitted to the Illinois Comptroller’s office last year, Flossmoor officials said Meijer has invested $13.58 million in the project.

Meijer purchased the store site from the village, which designated the area north of Vollmer and between Central Park Avenue and Crawford as a tax increment financing (TIF) district. Meijer is expected to develop five additional retail spaces in its complex.

Flossmoor still has 26 acres on the former TIF district land and plans to develop that property for retail use. Late last year, the village entered into a contract with Houseal Lavigne Associates, of Chicago, a consulting firm specializing in municipal economic development. Houseal Lavigne will provide advisory services aimed at attracting the right developers on the land next to the Meijer complex.
