Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s DECA program had 16 students advance to international competition after competing March 10, 11 and 12 in state competition.

The 16 students were named top 10 finishers and 13 of those students were selected to go on. DECA sponsor and teacher Michael O’Neill said three students also will participate at the international competition in the “Thrive” Leadership Academy.

Students who will compete at the competition in Nashville April 23 through 27 are:

John Weeks, business finance; Jorden Levine, business services marketing; Bolu Ajanaku, principles of finance; Joanie Coderre, principles of hospitality and tourism; Michael Gavin, restaurant and food service management.

Olivia Bergeron and Emma Brown, travel and tourism team; Hannah Levy, Hannah Lichtenberg and Julia Schwieterman, community service project; Ryan Bergal, Michael Havighorst and Allie Humphrey, learn and earn project; Joey Humphrey, Jimmy Humphrey and John Weeks, business operations research.

Kevin Steiner, Bernie Coderre and Joey Humphrey were selected to attend the “Thrive” Leadership Academy.  

Students ranked in the Top 10 but not attending the international competition are:

Joey Greenebaum, sports and entertainment; Frank Lepore, automotive services marketing; Sally Pauss, principles of marketing; Jimmy Humphrey, business operations research.

DECA was organized at H-F in 2004. The extracurricular club prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe.

H-F had 51 students in state competition. They were selected after placing in first, second or third place at DECA Moraine Valley South Region competition in January.

In addition to the students moving on to international competition, the following students represented H-F:

First place regional competitors who advanced to state competitors Bernie Coderre and Sam Cutrara, financial services; Olivia Bergeron and Emma Brown, travel and tourism; Hannah Levy and Julia Schwieterman, business law and ethics; Ryan Bergal and Lonzo Lynn, buying and merchandising.

David Meehan, principles of business management; Ethan Richert, principles of finance; Joanie Coderre, principles of hospitality; James Steiner, principles of marketing; John Weeks, business finance; Allie Humphrey, food marketing; Michael Havighorst, human resource management; Lauren Kuchta, marketing management; Michael Gavin, restaurant and food service management; Mary Donkel, retail merchandising; Joey Greenebaum, sports and entertainment marketing.

Second place regional competitors who advanced to state competition were:

Delaney Herkert and Michaela Reid, travel and tourism; Brent Hughes and Nolan Cardona, financial services; Olivia Drwiega and Anna Lane, hospitality services; Kevin Steiner and Jack Mulligan, marketing communications.

Kayla Winfrey, principles of business management; Bolu Ajanaku, principles of finance; Jimmy Humphrey, principles of hospitality; Hannah Lichtenberg, apparel and accessories marketing; Jorden Levine, business services marketing; Jared Moore, human resource management; Tylon Ross, marketing management; Alyssa Agrigento, quick serve restaurant management; Micah Moore, sports and entertainment marketing.

Third place regional competitors who advanced to state competition were:

Josie Bachus, principles of business management; Preston Gennett, principles of finance; Sally Pauss, principles of marketing; Abbey Sowacke, apparel and accessories marketing; Glynnis McManamy, business services marketing; Frank Lepore, automotive services marketing;Nick Cueller, business finance; Grace Sowacke, food marketing; Joey Humphrey, quick serve restaurant management; Mekhi Baclig and Henry Van Etten, financial services; Tom Planera and Grace Lipscomb, marketing communications; Carter Byrd and Blake VanNiel, business law and ethics.

H-F High School’s DECA team had 51 students 
compete.
