Tribute honors former Homewood resident

The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District gave approval to a special permit that will allow the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce to host Hops in Homewood in Irwin Park on July 30.

At its March 15 meeting, the board agreed to the one-time liquor license as long as the event is cordoned off from the park’s playground area, which will remain open.

The chamber has been working with the Village of Homewood on the initiative that may draw as many as 800 persons to the afternoon event. Guests 21-and-over will pay a fee and get a wristband to designate their attendance.

David Hinderliter, president of the chamber, told board members Brewfest Partners of Caledonia, Wisc., will be hired to run the event. It has put on similar events in neighboring Indiana communities.

“We didn’t want to do it ourselves. We want a safe, fun environment,” he said. “At the end of the day, we want to have a great event for Homewood.”

Park board members asked numerous questions of Hinderliter, including whether food will be part of the event. The chamber is investigating food trucks, because of their convenience, he said. The chamber may also involve local restaurants.

There was discussion about the need for parking. The park board has dealt with parking problems when it hosts major events, such as the Starry Nights programs. Hinderliter said he hopes some of those attending will come via Metra. The Homewood station is just three blocks from Irwin Park.

The event will happen rain or shine.

Hops in Homewood is intended to draw people to the village. Hinderliter said the goal is to make it an annual event.

H-F Park District hosted Explore the Pour, its own version of this event, in January.  It sold out in short order and got great reviews from the 150 people in attendance.  The park district is planning a second Explore the Pour event in fall. No date has been set.
