Interns broaden local news coverage, gain experience

In welcoming its first two interns this summer, the Homewood-Flossmoor Chronicle is expanding coverage and teaching local young people how to be journalists — part of its mission to serve the community.

  Brittney Ermon

Brittney Ermon of Homewood and Joseph Dorsey of Park Forest joined the H-F Chronicle staff in May and are covering community events, local government and business developments.

Ermon is majoring in telecommunications, journalism news and Spanish at Ball State University in Muncie, Ind. She currently is a reporter and anchor for NewsLink Indiana, producing stories for the student-run nightly newscast. Ermon also is news director at WCRD Radio in Muncie.

She is a 2013 graduate of Homewood-Flossmoor High School, where she began her studies in broadcast journalism.

  Joseph Dorsey

Dorsey, an English major at Prairie State College, has also studied at Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Okla., and Columbia College Chicago. He currently is editor-in-chief of The Student Review, the school newspaper at Prairie State and previously served as copy editor.

He is a 2010 graduate of Illiana Christian High School in Lansing.

“We’re providing experience that will be valuable to them in their careers,” said editor Tom Houlihan.

The H-F Chronicle’s editorial staff is an all-volunteer team headed by professional journalists Houlihan, Marilyn Thomas and Eric Crump. They also are proprietors of the Chronicle.
