Village officials: Homewood budget remains stable

A high-speed chase down Governors Highway though Flossmoor and Homewood earlier this month ended with the arrest of two juveniles, who are facing charges of fleeing and eluding police – a felony — and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.

The driver of the car is 15 – a Flossmoor police report described him as being slight and about 5 feet tall. His passenger is 16. Both youths are from Harvey.

The incident began at 10:39 p.m. on April 6, according to the police report. A Flossmoor officer was sitting in his car in the parking lot just north of Homewood-Flossmoor High School’s North Building when a silver-colored 2012 Nissan pulled into the lot, and going the wrong way.

The officer noticed that the vehicle’s rear license plate was hanging lower than usual, which can be sign of a stolen car. He started following the Nissan, which circled the North Building and then headed back onto Governors Highway heading north.

When the officer signaled the car to pull over, the driver sped up, reaching 65 mph, the report states. The speed limit in that stretch of Governors Highway is 45 mph. The driver went through the traffic light at 183rd Street and continued north.

The driver attempted to make a left turn onto Knollwood Place in Hazel Crest, just south of 175th Street. However, one of the Nissan’s tires “disintegrated,” the report states, and the driver lost control of the car and it slid off the roadway.

At this point, officers from Homewood and Hazel Crest had joined the pursuit. After the two youths ran away from the vehicle, officers chased them in a westerly direction through the neighborhood. The driver threw off his camouflage-colored coat, which was retrieved by officers.

The chase continued to 175th Street and Kedzie Avenue, where the driver of the car was apprehended. A witness at the intersection told police that another youth had asked him for some change so that he could catch a bus home. Police found that youth and arrested him.

The two youths were taken to the Flossmoor police station. Later that night they were released to their parents, the report states.

Flossmoor Deputy Chief Tod Kamleiter said charges are being prepared against the two suspects and that they will be referred to Cook County Juvenile Court.
