H-F High honors Viking athletes in seven sports

The Athletic Department at Homewood-Flossmoor High School honored outstanding students in cross country, field hockey, golf, boys soccer and girls tennis for their successes during the fall 2016 season. The students were recognized on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Fall Athletic Awards Night-Part 1 program.

The Athletic Department at Homewood-Flossmoor High School honored outstanding students in cross country, field hockey, golf, boys soccer and girls tennis for their successes during the fall 2016 season.

The students were recognized on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at the Fall Athletic Awards Night-Part 1 program at the high school. Students received the Sportsmanship Award, Most Improved Player award and Most Valuable Player award.

On the Boys Cross Country team, the Sportsmanship Award was presented to Andrew Harris, Most Improved Player to Elijah Leake and Most Valuable Player to Stewart Keene.

One season highlight for the varsity team was when Elijah Leake and Stewart Keene set the pace and the team ran well enough at the IHSA Regional to advance to the IHSA Sectional race in Edwardsville. Team coaches are Matt Gibson and David Altman.

Girls Cross Country honorees were Morgan Murphy, Sportsmanship Award; Paige Williams, Most Improved Player; and Elizabeth Lampley, Most Valuable Player.

The team competed at both the Tinley Park Invite and Peoria Invite and recorded times that improved by more than one minute. Elizabeth Lampley qualified for the IHSA Sectionals in Edwardsville and finished the 5K in 20:31 and was only six seconds from qualifying for state. Team coaches are Mary Kate Pack and Bridget Driscoll.

The Field Hockey team’s Sportsmanship Award was presented to Emma Piotrowski, Most Improved Player was Isolde Belisle-Dempsey and Most Valuable Player was Kathryn Donermeyer.

The team made it to the IHSA playoffs this year, and the team traveled to the Gateway Field Hockey Tournament in St. Louis. Team coaches are Julie Gaham, Lynn Raiser, Ronnie Falkner and Tracy Bosco.

On the Boys Golf team, the Sportsmanship Award was presented to Hayden Henry, the Most Improved Player Award was presented to Carter Schultz and Most Valuable Player was Perry Hoag.

The Vikings finished in the top third of all of their tournaments. The team won second place in the SWSC Conference Championship, just three strokes out of first place. In IHSA Regionals, the team placed fifth just missing third place by two strokes. Team coaches are Chris Stiglic, Keith Dombkowski and Ryan Sheriff.

The Girls Golf team Sportmanship Award was presented to Amber Haywood, Most Improved Player was Sophia Johnson and Most Valuable Player was Olivia Bergeron.

The overall team record improved this year and the girls strived for best effort in every round. The team will miss its large group of seniors that will be graduating this year. The team is coached by Brad Kain, with help from Junior Varsity Coach Matt Dreger.

The Boys Soccer team Sportsmanship Award was presented to Leroy Barron; Most Improved Player was Steph Kirchschlager; Most Valuable Player was Jared Hoekstra.

The H-F team battled to a fifth place finish in SWSC competition. Off the field, the players participated in the Buddy’s Helpers charity challenge raising money for underprivileged kids in Chicago. They also volunteered as officials at the H-F Special Olympics Unified Soccer Tournament. Team coaches are Chris Reid, Gil Smit, Armando Lopez, Josh Meekma, Charlie Ward and Emmanuel Allie.

The Girls Tennis team Sportsmanship Award went to Nia Williams; Most Improved Player was Lauren Parker; Most Valuable Player was Jane Wenckus.

The 2016 Girls Varsity Tennis Team had a very productive and successful season, the team showed consistent improvement during the season and player outstanding tennis during Conference, Sectional and State tournament play. Highlights include wins over Lincoln-Way West, Lincoln-Way Central, Stagg and Andrew High Schools. The team was the recipient of the SWSC Sportsmanship Award. The team is coached by Don Baron, Karen Blaauw and Jaime Gill.

The H-F Athletic Department Chair is Don Vosnos; athletic secretary is Loretta Alexander; athletic trainers are Brad Kleine and Catherine Brown; strength and conditioning coach is Steve Szymkowiak.
