Girl Scouts donate cookie money for a Buddy Bench

No one should be without a friend, especially on a playground where kids play games and challenge each other on who can climb and swing the highest or run the furthest. And if you do sit out, you shouldn’t be alone. Sit with a buddy. Girl Scouts collaborated recently to put a Buddy Bench at Western Avenue School to serve as a place for buddies to sit.

No one should be without a friend, especially on a playground where kids play games and challenge each other on who can climb and swing the highest or run the furthest.

And if you do sit out, you shouldn’t be alone. Sit with a buddy.

That was the idea behind a special donation from Daisy Girl Scout Troops 60775 and 65149 at Western Avenue School in Flossmoor.

When the profits from the spring 2016 Girl Scout cookie sales arrived, leaders asked the girls how they wanted to spend the money.  Someone had seen a story about the Buddy Bench and offered that as an option.

The 30 girls in the two troops donated $600 for the bench. A special dedication ceremony for the bench on the school’s playground was held this month.

Members of Brownie troops 65460 and 60523 donated $450 toward projects at the school, including the purchase of new lost and found bins and coat racks that helped organize an otherwise cluttered space in the school.

Western Avenue School Principal Chad Prosen thanked the girls for their donations telling them both projects were special gifts to the school and their fellow students.

The four troops are under the guidance of troop leaders Missie Symowicz, Kelly Philbin, Mary Murray and Karen Cheung. Girls are on a waiting list to join Girl Scouts. Anyone interested in volunteering can email [email protected].
