Flossmoor Community Church hosts GSU professor to address Syrian history, culture

A civil war has placed Syria in the headlines the past five years, but few Americans are knowledgeable about the history and culture of this Middle East country. Dr. Khalil Marrar, an assistant professor at Governors State University, will enlighten guests on Syria at an 11 a.m. forum on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Road.

Dr. Khalil Marrar, an assistant professor at Governors State University, will enlighten guests on Syria at an 11 a.m. forum on Sunday, Sept. 25, at Flossmoor Community Church, 2218 Hutchison Rd.

The church is hosting the program as part of its co-sponsorship efforts for refugee resettlement through the Refugee One organization. The family is expected to be in the Chicago area near the end of the month.

Marrar, a native of Kuwait, will speak on Syrian history and culture. Marrar focuses his research on the intersection of public policy and foreign affairs, specializing in Middle East politics.

He has authored two books, “The Arab Lobby” and “U.S. Foreign Policy: The Two-State Solution, and Middle East Conflicts: The Basics.” He has given commentary on wide-ranging topics, including ISIS terror attacks in Brussels and Paris and American policy after the Arab Spring, for local and national publications and he has been a guest on several news programs.

Following his discussion there will be a “Taste of Syria” sampling of authentic Syrian food in the church’s Fellowship Hall.
