Melinda will be one of three teen coordinators for the “Ambassadors to Bulgaria” trip visiting five cities in 10 days. The 75 ambassadors will be doing special service projects for Jewish organizations in three of those cities.

BBYO is is a trans-denominational Jewish youth organization that provides Jewish teens from grades 9 through 12 with leadership opportunities and social outlets.

Her interest in this trip was piqued because she has been on BBYO’s Global Networking Committee the past two years. The committee’s focus on globalization reaches out to the group’s members in 40 countries. She also serves as president of the local Girls BBYO chapter.

Melinda said BBYO has tasked her to develop discussions for the trip on the global Jewish network and how North American European teens can strengthen that network.

At H-F, Melinda is a student in the International Baccalaureate Program where the focus is on global perspectives “so it all ties together with what I’m doing now and what I’m planning for Bulgaria,” she said.

She also is a member of the H-F debate team.

Melinda is the daughter of Debbie and Elliott Berman of Flossmoor. She is a member of Temple Anshe Sholom in Olympia Fields.

She will be pursuing a bachelor’s degree in atmospheric, oceanic and environmental sciences at UCLA.
