Homewood District 153 school board will look for new member

The Homewood District 153 school board will conduct a special meeting on May 1 to swear in three incumbents, but one seat will remain vacant ― for the time being.

Deborah Smith Havighorst, Gregory Lawrence and Shelly Marks were re-elected to four-year terms in the April 4 election. They were unopposed.

Board member Steve Anderson will be resigning his position after 10 years. He won election to the District 233 school board for Homewood-Flossmoor High School.

The board will need to find someone willing to serve the two years remaining on his term.

The final election vote totals will be certified at the special meeting at James Hart School, 18220 Morgan St. New board officers will be elected that night, and the board’s meeting calendar for the next year will be set.

As soon as Anderson submits his letter of resignation, District 153 will set into motion the search procedures for a new board member, said Marks, the board president.

Notification of a vacancy will be publicly announced and applications will be solicited. Marks is confident a member of the community will show interest in the position.

“We have so many great people in our community,” she said. “I don’t anticipate any problem finding the right person for the school board.”

District 153 serves students at Willow, Churchill and Hart Schools.
