The Cook County Assessor’s Office will hold an Assessment Appeal Workshop on April 25 to help Homewood residents residing in Bremen Township understand and appeal their properties’ proposed reassessment values.
The workshop will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Acorn Public Library, 15624 Central Ave. in Oak Forest.
Assessor Joseph Berrios said the time to file appeals is now, when the reassessment notices are received and reassessment values are not yet final. Final reassessment values are usually in place for three years.
Each year, the Cook County Assessor’s Office reassesses one-third of the nearly 1.8 million parcels of property located in Cook County. This year, the office is reassessing properties located in the South Suburbs.
Bremen Township property owners will receive mailed reassessment notices in mid-April. The notices contain proposed Tax Year 2017 reassessment values that will be reflected on second installment tax bills to be mailed and due in summer 2018.
“Our outreach seminars are designed to provide homeowners with personal and local access to information regarding their new reassessment values,” the assessor said.
“We want to ensure that taxpayers are provided with all the tools necessary to not only understand their assessments but also appeal them if they choose to do so.”
Representatives from the Cook County Assessor’s Office will be at the seminar to answer questions and assist homeowners in filing assessment appeals.
Taxpayers are encouraged to bring their reassessment notices. Assessment information will also be distributed to attendees by the assessor’s staff.
The assessor’s office website also has information on property assessments and assessment appeals. In addition to being able to download and file appeal forms, residential property, owners may also utilize the site to search for comparable property assessment information to include in their appeals.
