To help get the new school year in Flossmoor District 161 off to a fun start, students, parents and community members will be “chalking it up” on Wednesday, the day before classes begin.

“The purpose of the event is to write positive messages to our students to show them that the community is behind them as they begin another exciting school year,” said Superintendent Dana Smith.

He described it as a “pretty informal activity” but one that will be meaningful to the children.

Smith provided details about how to participate.

Chalk was distributed at the Friday, Aug. 18, back to school Meet and Greet sponsored by District 161 and the village of Flossmoor. It will also be available this week at the five District161 schools.

Parents and community members are being encouraged to leave messages at the schools on Wednesday. Classes begin on Thursday, Aug. 24.

Smith said principals will be on hand for Wednesday’s "chalk it up" at these times:
  • Flossmoor Hills, Heather Hill and Western Avenue Schools from 2 to 4 p.m.
  • Serena Hills School from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
  • Parker Junior High School from 3 to 6 p.m.

Well-wishers can also stop by after work or in the early evening to leave encouraging notes, Smith said.
