Rabid bat found in downtown Homewood

A rabid bat was found in downtown Homewood on Aug. 23, according to an alert posted by Donna Alexander, administrator of Cook County Animal and Rabies Control.

The bat, found in the 1900 block of Ridge Road, was determined to be rabid by the Illinois State Public Health Laboratory,  she said.

Anyone who is exposed to or bitten by a bat should contact a doctor immediately. All residents should keep their dogs, cats and ferrets on a leash when out of their homes. Any animal that does not have a current rabies vaccination should be inoculated with rabies vaccine immediately.

Alexander warned residents not to handle any bats, skunks or other wild animals. Anyone who finds dead animals should call the Cook County Department of Animal Control at 708-974-6140.
