HFHS board salutes student production of 'Sister Act'

Student performers from the fall musical “Sister Act” took a curtain call on Nov. 21 for the Homewood-Flossmoor High School board.

Based on the movie of the same name starring Whoopie Goldberg, “Sister Act” was performed by a student cast and live orchestra on Nov. 10-11 at H-F’s Mall Auditorium.

H-F senior Joy Woods spoke on behalf of the cast and sang a song from the show.

“Thanks to everyone who saw the show. We really appreciate it,” Woods said.

H-F teacher J.R. Rose, director of this year’s musical, echoed the cast’s thanks for community support for arts education.

“This community demands excellence in the arts,” Rose said. “We’re proud to be able to do all of the things that we do all year. Thank you for all of the opportunities and support.”

Rod Bowden, a faculty member who was the stage and production manager for “Sister Act,” thanked the board and those who attended the show.

“Thank you all for coming out to the show and supporting us. That’s why we have a great fine arts program,” Bowden said.

Like other H-F musicals, “Sister Act” was primarily a student-run show, Rose said. Students were responsible for building sets and other technical aspects of the production.

Rose also praised the live pit orchestra of H-F band students and their conductor, H-F band director Sarah Whitlock.

“The music sounds amazing, year after year. It’s a totally different bailiwick when the musicians have to deal with a live performance with actors and anything can happen,” Rose said.

For those who missed the show, a Viking Television video is available on Youtube with the title “Sister Act (performed by HF Theater).”
