IPO welcomes conductor, 2 south suburban natives for Feb. 25 performance

The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) will welcome guest maestro Darko Butorac as conductor for its 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25, performance “Opposites Attract.” The concert is at Lincoln-Way West Performing Arts Center, 21701 Gougar Road in New Lenox.

Butorac will direct the orchestra’s performances of Verdi’s “La forza del destino Overture,” Mozart’s “Sinfonia Concertante” and Prokofiev’s “Symphony No. 5.”

Butorac will give a pre-concert talk in the auditorium at 6:30 p.m.

He is the fourth conductor candidate as the IPO searches for a new permanent maestro. He now serves as the music director for the Tallahassee and Missoula Symphony Orchestras.

Joining the IPO as soloists on the Mozart work will be south suburban natives Jasmine Lin on violin and Matthew Lipman on viola.

Lin is a Homewood-Flossmoor High School graduate with degrees from Indiana University and Curtis Institute of Music. She currently teaches in Chicago and tours both as a soloist and a member of Trio Voce and the Formosa Quartet.

Lipman, originally of University Park, studied with Matthew Mantell, the IPO principal viola player, before earning his degree from The Julliard School. He was the 2015 recipient of a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant, and has performed at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.

Tickets start at $25, if ordered in advance, or from $35 at the door. Student tickets are $5 with ID. Lincoln-Way District 210 students are free with ID.
