Mark J. Snyder, a mechanic in Flossmoor’s public works department for the last 40 years, was honored by the village board last week.

Snyder, who is retiring, received a resolution in his honor at the June 19 board meeting.

The resolution said Snyder provided the “highest quality of assistance to the residents of the Village in times of rain, snow and worst of weather conditions,” adding that he also mentored and trained his co-workers in the department.

Snyder began as a field maintenance worker on June 22, 1977 and was promoted to mechanic in 1980.

Snyder has served for 39 years in the Flossmoor volunteer fire department. He received the certifications of Firefighter 2, Firefighter 3, Fire Apparatus Engineer, Confined Space/Trench Awareness, Fire Service Vehicle Operator and Hazardous Material Operations.

According to the resolution, Snyder diligently maintained the village’s fleet of automobiles, trucks and equipment, as well as municipal buildings.

Snyder was also named an honorary member of the Municipal Fleet Managers Association.

“Mark’s experience and knowledge made him an invaluable asset to the Public Works Department and the village as a whole,” the resolution states.

Public Works Director John Brunke has worked with Snyder for seven years and said he considers him a great colleague and friend.

“Working with him has been very enjoyable and I would say all his co-workers feel the same way,” Brunke said.
