Illinois Philharmonic premiere’s violin work April 8

Guest conductor Sean Newhouse will direct the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) for its season finale April 8 featuring Tessa Lark as guest performer for Edgar Meyer’s “Violin Concerto.”

The program will begin with a 6:30 p.m. pre-concert question and answer session followed by the IPO ‘s concert at 7:30 p.m. at Lincoln-Way Central’s Performing Arts Center, 1801 E. Haven in New Lenox.

The concert is themed around American perspectives, and Newhouse selected the violin concerto, commissioned in 1999, because it has an Appalachian flavor and bluegrass flair.

Lark, who has Kentucky roots, will draw on her bluegrass and Appalachian music traditions for the work. Lark has won numerous awards, including the 2016 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the silver medal in the 9th Quadrennial International Violin Competition.

Newhouse is the final guest conductor and one of five candidates to serve as IPO maestro and music director. He is the winner of the Aspen Conducting Prize, and has won major prizes in several competitions.

Tickets for the concert start at $25 in advance. Orders are being accepted at ipomusic.org.  The box office will open at 6 p.m. before the concert. Tickets at the door start at $35. Students with ID are $5. For information, call the IPO at 708-481-7774.
