Crews from the Homewood police and fire departments tried to rescue a driver after a car plunged into Dolphin Lake at 183rd Street and Governors Highway around 9 a.m. Friday.

According to Homewood police, a caller reported the car went into the water after veering off of Governors Highway.

“Two police officers that arrived on the scene entered into the water and were assisted by two Homewood firefighters who were able to reach and rescue the driver from the vehicle,” according to the police statement.

The driver was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead. Police were not releasing the name of the driver pending notification of his family.

Police confirmed there was only one person in the car. They say the preliminary investigation “indicates the driver may have had a medical emergency.”

Police blocked Governors Highway at 183rd Street for nearly three hours as first responders gave assistance.

The Homewood Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit is continuing its investigation of the accident with assistance from the Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team.

The Homewood Fire Department was assisted at the scene by MABAS Division 24 Dive Rescue Team. MABAS Division 24 also assisted Homewood Fire Department with the recovery of the vehicle.

About Us

A great community deserves a great newspaper. The HF Chronicle was created in June 2014 as the Homewood Chronicle (but we soon realized Homewood and Flossmoor are so interconnected that it makes better sense to cover both villages). Our mission is to chronicle the life of our community — news by, for, and about the people of Homewood and Flossmoor, Illinois.
