Crews from the Homewood police and fire departments tried to rescue a driver after a car plunged into Dolphin Lake at 183rd Street and Governors Highway around 9 a.m. Friday.

According to Homewood police, a caller reported the car went into the water after veering off of Governors Highway.

“Two police officers that arrived on the scene entered into the water and were assisted by two Homewood firefighters who were able to reach and rescue the driver from the vehicle,” according to the police statement.

The driver was transported to the hospital and was pronounced dead. Police were not releasing the name of the driver pending notification of his family.

Police confirmed there was only one person in the car. They say the preliminary investigation “indicates the driver may have had a medical emergency.”
