Homewood has a photo gallery of local military veterans in the lower level of village hall, creating a public space for the faces of those who served.

Now the village Veterans Committee wants to make those faces more visible, with banners displayed on light poles along main thoroughfares from Independence Day to Veterans Day.

“A lot of youth today don’t know anybody who’s been in the military,” Charlene Dyer, chairwoman of the committee said April 8 at the Veterans Breakfast at Balagio Ristorante in Homewood.

The banners will be both an introduction to and a reminder of those who have served.

Dyer said the cost is modest, and the committee hopes to raise about $600 in coming weeks so banners can be on display on or shortly before July 4. She hopes to have them posted along Dixie Highway and Ridge Road through the downtown area.

Dyer said anyone making a donation and sponsoring a banner should make sure the veteran being honored agrees to be featured.
