The Homewood-Flossmoor Park District has been selected a finalist for the 2017 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management.

“We are extremely proud to be a finalist for this prestigious award,” said park district Executive Director Debbie Kopas. “The H-F Park District serves the community daily through conservation, recreation and education. These Gold Medal standards are embedded in our organization at every level.  We are honored to be recognized on a national level with three other outstanding park districts.”

H-F Park District last won the top honor in 2006, and was nominated in 2016.

The park district is being judged in the Class V category for communities with a population under 30,000. The other three park districts are from two other Chicago-area communities, Glencoe and Itasca, and Windsor, Colo. The winner will be selected by a panel of park and recreation professionals and announced at the National Recreation and Park Association  (NRPA) conference in New Orleans in September.

The award, established in 1965, honors communities that demonstrate excellence in parks and recreation through long-range planning, resource management, volunteerism, environmental stewardship, program development, professional development and agency recognition.

The award is given by the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration in partnership with NRPA.

“While I know our entire team's true satisfaction comes from seeing the community enjoy the many offerings our park district provides, it's rewarding to be recognized by the National Recreation and Park Association,” said H-F park commissioner Steve Johnson.

About Us

A great community deserves a great newspaper. The HF Chronicle was created in June 2014 as the Homewood Chronicle (but we soon realized Homewood and Flossmoor are so interconnected that it makes better sense to cover both villages). Our mission is to chronicle the life of our community — news by, for, and about the people of Homewood and Flossmoor, Illinois.
