This is her first published book. It features a collect of stories previously published in literary journals and anthologies that explore the experiences of native and immigrant Palestinians. “Code of the West” won the Willow Books Grand Prize and earned an honorable mention from Best American Short Stories 2016 and two Pushcart Prize nominations. It is available through Amazon.com.
Mustafah said most of this short story collection was part of her thesis for a master of fine arts degree in fiction writing from Columbia College Chicago. She was a Follett Scholar student at Columbia from 2010 to 2013.
Mustafah has been an English teacher at H-F for 20 years and is the faculty sponsor of the award-winning arts magazine “Edda,” written and produced by H-F students.
She and Anita Dellaria co-founded the online journal Bird’s Thumb nearly five years ago. It is devoted to new and emerging voices.
“We decided to create a space where creative work wouldn’t be lost to the slush-pile for emerging writers,” Mustafah explained. “We’ve published award-winning writers, as well as new writers in every issue.”
