IPO’s new conductor will open the 40th season on Oct. 14

The Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra (IPO) will open its 40th season Oct. 14 under the direction of Stilian Kirov, its new music director and conductor.
This year the IPO also will be in a new home at Ozinga Chapel at Trinity Christian College, 6601 W. College Drive in Palos Heights. The season’s programs are being inspired by the 100th anniversary of the birth of Leonard Bernstein.
On opening night, the IPO will perform Beethoven’s “Triple Concerto” because Bernstein always played the piano part when it was performed. The piece will feature the Hersh Trio, a son-father-grandfather ensemble. Together they play cello, violin and piano.
The program also includes Mendelssohn’s “Symphony No. 5 Reformation” as a way to mark the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, and Ottorino Respighi’s “The Birds,” which reflects the connective power of music with four distinct bird songs.
Opening night is sponsored by WFMT-FM classical music radio station.
Tickets for this concert start at $25. Student tickets are $10 and group tickets are available with a minimum of seven patrons. Ticketing fees may apply. Subscriber rates of up to 40 percent off are available.
Ticket information is at ipomusic.org or at 708-481-7774.
