Homewood officials to initiate discussion whether to seek home rule status to help address community issues

At the Homewood trustees meeting Tuesday, Oct. 10, Village Manager Jim Marino plans to introduce the question of whether the village should consider seeking home rule status.

The board meets at 7:30 p.m. in village hall, 2020 Chestnut Road.

Marino plans to present a number of issues facing the community, including those in education, public safety and property values. In a memo to the village president and board of trustees, he said home rule status could be considered as a way to provide tools that would help the village address a variety of issues.

He said the purpose of introducing the subject is to engage the community in discussion about the issue.

Home rule status gives municipalities greater authority for self-governance, but it requires approval by voters.

In other business, trustees will consider
  • A bid waiver to replace six radios for the police department

  • A resolution to grant right-of-way to Verizon

  • An ordinance to establish rules for public comment at village meetings

  • A bid waiver and budget amendment for purchasing a sewer cleaning machine

  • Reappointing Paul Kramer and Regina Zohfeld to the Tree Committee.

The board is expected to convene in closed session to discuss the purchase or lease of property.
