Author, mother discuss years in search of family history after 1930s displacement

Author Fern Schumer Chapman and her mother, Edith Westerfeld, will discuss “Edith’s Immigration Journey: A Refugee’s Story of Prejudice and Empathy” during a 1:30 p.m. presentation on Nov. 5 at B’nai Yehuda Beth Sholom, 1424 W. 183rd St. in Homewood.

The story revolves around Edith Westerfeld, 92, whose parents sent her to relatives in the United States in 1938 when she was 12 to protect her from the Nazis. For many years, Westerfeld refused to discuss even the smallest details of her earlier life.

She was in her 70s when she traveled to Germany with her daughter. The two women will tell the story of Westerfeld’s struggles with loss, her assimilation in the U.S., her personal identity struggles and family legacy.

This free program is presented through a grant from the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago, a partner with the Jewish United Fund of Chicago.
