H-F senior Justin Hall has a big night against Michigan City

Last Friday night was all about Justin Hall as he racked up 247 all-purpose yards with five touchdowns to cap off an outstanding performance as Homewood-Flossmoor defeated Michigan City by a score of 63-21 in the Vikings’ first game of the season.

Last Friday night was all about Justin Hall as he racked up 247 all-purpose yards with five touchdowns to cap off an outstanding performance as Homewood-Flossmoor defeated Michigan City by a score of 63-21 in the Vikings’ first game of the season.

The Vikings, without their starting quarterback Kellyn Gerenstein, who is out with back problems, had a tough task ahead of them in the Aug. 25 contest, but handled it with ease, proving doubters wrong once again.

Each year H-F is regarded as a sleeper team. This year, the squad is ranked eighth among Southland football teams after an undefeated regular season last year.

It was known that the Vikings had big-time returning players, but it was unexpected  that team members would perform like they did last season.

Sophomore Dominic Jones replaced Gerenstein and the passing attack remained competent with a total of 105 yards and only one turnover.

“Dominic did a nice job for his first varsity start,” Vikings head coach Craig Buzea said. “He will take that experience and I’m very confident that he will continue to positively progress throughout the season.”

H-F picked up 549 yards on offense, with 444 on the ground in the non-conference opener with Michigan City, whose squad traveled across the Indiana border to play the Vikings.

The Vikings defense also performed well, and was very stingy throughout the night. Michigan City quarterback Michael McCollough Jr. did not complete a single pass until the end of the second quarter.

The Vikings, off to a 1-0 start, play another out-of-state team this weekend. They are traveling to take on Southern Durham High, in North Carolina, on Friday, Sept. 1.
