Local temple and mosque offer Day of Service opportunity

Two local religious organizations are inviting Homewood and Flossmoor residents to contribute to the Million Meal Program, an effort to fight hunger among senior citizens.

The event on Sept. 10 at the Chicago Theological Seminary is co-sponsored by a number of organizations, including B’nai Yehuda Beth Shalom (BYBS) in Homewood and The Mosque Cares in East Hazel Crest.

Brian Zakem, the BYBS liaison to the project, said the event is part of the National Day of Service and Remembrance commemorating the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It is also one of a number of collaborations between the congregations of the local temple and the mosque.

The Million Meal Program will operate Sept. 10 with shifts from  9:30 a.m. to noon, including a registration period, and 1:30 to 4 p.m. Volunteers will help pack meals to be distributed to area seniors.
