Domestic Violence Awareness Month marked by vigil Oct. 2 at Irwin Park

The community is invited to the South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) 12th annual candelight vigil at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2, at Irwin Park, Ridge Road at Highland Avenue in Homewood.

The vigil will feature music by members of Bel Canto Children’s Choir and a presentation by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx. She will discuss how domestic violence and sexual assault cases are handled by the State’s Attorney’s Office.

Participants will also hear from former SSFS clients discussing how, as victims of domestic violence, they received help from SSFS.

The event will help kick off Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Purple awareness ribbons will be handed out.

SSFS, a not-for-profit agency, also will use the event to raise awareness about its free services to families experiencing domestic violence. These services include:  24-hour crisis hotline, emergency shelter, counseling for adult victims and their children, medical advocacy program, court advocacy program, prevention program, partner abuse intervention program, professional training and more.  All services are available in English and Spanish.

For additional information, contact SSFS at 708-794-2140, extension 303.
