The event from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Izaak Walton Preserve, 1100 Ridge Road in Homewood, will feature a nature walk and a festival.  This benefit will support and help expand the PopUp Science programs at the center.

Advance tickets are on sale through Oct. 17. Online ticket sales end Oct. 20.

The day’s event begins with “The Walk,” a stroll through the preserve’s 3.6-mile loop. Between 10:30 a.m. and noon, participants along the path will hear from leading experts about the flora and fauna of the area. Experts from the University of Chicago, the Museum of Science and Industry, the Field Museum and Shedd Aquarium will participate. This event is sponsored by Wintrust Financial.

“Izaak Walton Preserve is such an amenity to our area and we are celebrating the beauty of the preserve with the help of leading experts,” said Holly Kelsven, the science center’s marketing, events and fundraising coordinator. “This is a unique opportunity for people to learn more about the ecosystem and impact of the preserve.”

Because of the distance, the walk is recommended for adults and children 10 and older.

The second half of the program, “The Fest,” will be from noon to 3 p.m. Music will be by The Resonators. Food trucks will be available. Lassen’s Tap is providing cocktails and beer. Enjoy a corn roast or sit around a campfire and roast marshmallows. This event is sponsored by Lassen’s Tap.

From noon to 3 p.m., the science center is presenting a double dose of PopUp Science: “Spooky Science,” a Halloween-themed take on science with a hands-on ‘mad scientist’ station and a look at gross anatomy; and “Autumn Ecology” led by staff from the Irons Oaks Environmental Learning Center giving presentations on bugs, bees and bats.

Paper mask take-home kits will be available. HF Robotics will give demonstrations. Guests will have a chance to purchase tickets for a 50/50 raffle.

The afternoon festivities are presented by the Izaak Walton Preserve, Theatre & Arts Leadership Kouncil (TALK), HF Robotics, the Village of Homewood and Irons Oaks.

Adult tickets are $30 for the walk and fest and $25 for the fest only.

Children’s admission is $5 for the fest. The walk is free and is recommended for children 10 and older. Children under 18 years of age attending the fest must be accompanied by an adult.

This year the fest has two group and troop rate specials. The $125 rate for the walk and fest includes five adults and 10 children. The $225 rate includes 10 adults and 20 children.  Group and troop packages are available through Oct. 17.

Online ticket sales close at 5 p.m. Oct. 20.  Tickets will be available the day of the event for cash or credit.
