As befitting the occasion, there were plenty of smiles at Tuesday’s groundbreaking for an expanded Center for Dental Excellence in Flossmoor.

Champagne was uncorked and balloons popped, sending confetti into the air. CDE’s partners — Dr. Cary Goldberg and Dr. Charles Greenebaum — loosened a few spades of earth in front of a sign announcing a new building that will “fill a cavity” in Flossmoor’s triangle area between Governors Highway and Kedzie Avenue.

In his remarks, Greenebaum said CDE’s expansion has been “a vision that will soon be reality.” He thanked Flossmoor for its assistance in helping move the project forward.

“Dr. Goldberg and I have a special relationship with the South Suburbs,” he said. “Our team has grown from 12 to 30. Soon it will be 50.”

Flossmoor Mayor Paul Braun said CDE is a “wonderful community partner” that both provides top-notch professional services and is a supporter of numerous charitable organizations throughout the area.

During the expansion, the former bank building north of the current practice will be demolished. A two-story, 5,300-square-foot addition will be built that will more than double CDE’s space. The expanded facility will have 9,400 square feet and 20 treatment suites.

According to CDE, the practice will be one of just a handful of dental groups in the Midwest that house all specialties under one roof when the new addition opens next spring. The expanded facility will offer a wide range of dental services in one location.

The expanded facility will offer new amenities such as the non-intrusive Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT), which creates a detailed, accurate, high-resolution 3D image, allowing earlier and more accurate diagnosis of complex dental issues with much less exposure to radiation than traditional 2D X-rays.

The Center for Dental Excellence opened in June of 1999. Two years earlier, Goldberg and Greenebaum — who are both the sons of dentists with practices in the South Suburbs — had a chance meeting on the train on the way to a dental convention. The idea of merging their two practices was born during that encounter.

Once the expanded facility is finished, the original CDE structure will be completely remodeled. There will be no interruption of patient service during the expansion.
