The fourth grade wing of Churchill School in Homewood will look different because of the addition of two classrooms, and it will feel different for teachers and students who will use the space.

The wide open space followed the open concept classroom of the 1970s and 1980s. The desks and chairs in the space left room for students to walk around to get to classrooms that surrounded the open area that’s been used for intervention sessions – special assistance reviews in reading and math. Teachers would meet students for 40-minute sessions each day.

“We were looking at the existing footprint and saying these are the needs of our students and our staff,” said Principal Nikki Kerr.  “We pulled together a committee, staff from each of the different areas who would be utilizing the space, and talked about what their needs were and how we could best achieve them.”

The committee met with Superintendent Dale Mitchell and “brainstormed what we thought would help best meet those needs. It was a great process,” she added.

Two small rooms will now be one big room, and a second room is being constructed from that open space. The District 153 school board approved a $65,900 constract with REEF LLC for the work expected to be complete by Aug. 10.

Churchill, serving third, fourth and fifth graders, has 660 students enrolled for fall. It may go a bit higher as the school year starts, Kerr said. Increased enrollment in the district had Churchill staff adding another third grade class for next school year. Now there will be nine classes for each grade level.
