Flossmoor trustees ask CDE to revise incentive request

The Flossmoor Village Board asked the owners of Center for Dental Excellence to revise their proposal for economic incentives from the village.

The dental practice at 19615 Governors Highway is greatly expanding its physical space and service offerings. Plans call for a 4,000 square-foot addition to the current building. CDE asked the village to waive more than $9,000 in building permits and village fees. It also requested $10,000 to assist in landscaping the site, which is set to occupy a large and visible footprint along Governors Highway.

After some discussion at the Aug. 6 board meeting, trustees agreed that they may consider waiving the fees, but they weren’t in favor of withdrawing money from the village’s general fund to support the landscaping project.

They asked CDE co-owner Dr. Cary Goldberg, who was in attendance at the meeting, to resubmit the request after removing the cash incentive portion. Goldberg said he would talk with his co-owner, Dr. Charles Greenebaum, and return to the board with a revised proposal.

In May, CDE asked the village board to issue formal support of a Class 8 tax incentive request it filed with Cook County, which involves a reduction in county property taxes. Village trustees voted to offer the board’s endorsement at that time, subsequently calling it “the most impactful incentive the village could provide” to the business.

In other business, two Flossmoor residents were approved by the board for positions on village commissions.

Nancy Burrows was appointed chair of Flossmoor’s Public Art Commission. A 32-year resident of Flossmoor, Burrows previously served for many years as a member of the commission.

Burrows said she is excited to collaborate with what she called the “excellent” team at the Public Art Commission, which works to enhance art appreciation throughout the community.

She added that outgoing chair Richard Bumstead would be “a tough act to follow, but he’s been a wonderful role model.”

Five-year Flossmoor resident Carlo Gozzi was approved by trustees as the newest member of the Flossmoor Fire Pension Board, the entity responsible for managing monies related to the village fire department pension fund.

Gozzi has worked in the financial industry for 15 years and is currently employed by a privately held financial company. He said conversations with trustees encouraged him to join the Fire Pension Board.

A graduate of Infant Jesus of Prague School and Marian Catholic High School, Gozzi previously managed the former U.S. Bank branch location on Flossmoor Road for six years.

Like all residents who serve on village commissions and boards, Burrows and Gozzi are unpaid volunteers in their positions.

The board reported that the former Angelo’s Fresh Market store at 1044 Sterling Ave. in downtown Flossmoor will be the new home of the girls boutique Love, Noa.
