Black Panther comic author Okorafor to speak at the Homewood Public Library

Internationally recognized author Nnedi Okorafor will be a guest presenter at 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at the Homewood Public Library, 17913 Dixie Highway.
 
Okorafor, a Homewood-Flossmoor High graduate, wrote the comic book “Black Panther: Long Live the King” and is the author of “Shuri,” a comic featuring the Black Panther’s technical-wizard sister, set for release in October.

Okorafor has gained a reputation as an award-winning science fiction writer. She has written several books, and her short stories have been published in anthologies and magazines.  A collection of her stories, “Kabu Kabu,” was published by Prime Books in 2013.

Okorafor is known for weaving African culture into creative, evocative settings and memorable characters. Her work is enjoyed by readers of all ages.
She won the Hugo Award given to a writer of the best science fiction or fantasy work. Presented by the World Science Fiction Society, the Hugo Award is considered one of the highest honors for science fiction writing. She also received the Nebula Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America presented to the best science fiction writers in the U.S.

Her work “Who Fears Death” has been picked up by HBO to become a TV series with novelist and producer, George R.R. Martin. Okorafor is a consultant for the project.

The Homewood Public Library will be hosting programs and displays highlighting Okorafor and her works.
 
Fans of Shuri will enjoy a discussion program about the first issue of the new comic, SHURI, at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 27 at the library.
